Boy is this bringing back some memories. Thing that gets me is the whole time after this theft while this assholes boat sat at marina the rods he left on holders went untouched by the honest people at the marina. Grant they were not worth anything but you would at least think someone that got ripped off would have gone over and broke at least one of them over their knee. It only takes one bad apple.

Mike; ain't that the truth. Every time I went down to the marina, I looked to see if his rods were still in the rod holders:eek: They remained there until the boat got moved. Part of the judges decision was that he had to remove the boat because he hadn't paid his slip fees. While he had a deadline of a couple weeks to move it; it was months before the boat got moved (all the while, his equipment remained untouched).

All I can say is that POS is lucky it was not me he stole from. I hate thieves with a passion.

I learned long ago that the court system is a total joke - I had to go after money owed to me. Only took two court cases to decide it was much better to handle business myself.

You might want to contact Md Gazette - sure others would love to see first hand how court handled this.

I still think you should put his name out.

Been there done that. Had my credit card numbers stolen by a "friend" of my son that worked at Sears. I had even taken the little sh*t camping and fishing the summer before. Went to trial I was issued a subpoena to be there and the Judge just gave all involved a slap on the wrist. I stood up to speak my mind and was "out of line".

Let's just say, if a Matthew Dates answers a HO request; keep an eye on your tackle:eek:

When I was finished talking to the prosecutor and giving him my viewpoint, I gave him a copy of some flyers that were distributed around the courthouse. I figured it might drive home my point:D

Dates is not an uncommon last name - what is his address , strictly for the safety of my fishing gear.

Chessie27 01-06-2015 09:59 PM

What BS!! The court system seems to consistently prove that crime does pay after all  Maybe the system is bogged down too much already with bigger fish to fry but that doesn't mean squat to the little fish's victims!

Marty, I think since his boat was removed and his equiptment is junk, you should offer to take him out on your boat as a HO? You know, someplace real deep! ;)

I hope this story has a happy ending somehow but I'm doubting it will. Sad....

Chessie27 01-06-2015 10:22 PM

Ps- as for the roads, I can certainly understand your buddy being pissed. That's rediculous but not surprising. We too often dumb things down to mediocre as to not leave anyone behind. Set the expectations low so the goal is more attainable.

Makes me feel real good when I see how much I paid in MD income tax this year!

Hunter 01-11-2015 08:31 PM

Having to repay only for the victims' out of pocket cost with no consideration for what the insurance companies laid out is total BS. And they can't get the POS to make good on the reduced amount. He is damaged goods and needs to be treated like what he is....a damn criminal. The original felony charge should be reinstated as well.

Maryland didn't get dubbed the most liberal state in the country for no reason:mad:.

Skip,

If this is the same outstanding citizen, a court record search will show that he has also been charged with poaching, fishing without a license, tax lien, and driving without registration.

Well, it's been almost 2 1/2 years dealing with this scumbag. He was supposed to pay restitution to all of us that he stole electronics from; but never paid one red cent.
The last court appearance (a couple of months ago) the judge was pissed. No effort was made at all by Mr Dates. The judge sent him to the detention center and I assume he was processed and released on bail.
Over the two years, he would be served to appear in court, not bother to show, a warrant would be put out for him, he would appear in court (the next time), and give a host of excuses why he couldn't pay restitution.
TODAY, I get a letter in the mail from the court system saying "the defendants case has been closed by order of the court. Therefore, any collection of the unpaid balance is unlikely. This would not prevent you from pursuing civil action against the defendant."
WTF; case closed:eek:
I get on the phone and call the number listed in the letter for more information:mad: I expect this asshat to be behind bars; but NOOOOOO, they can't find any evidence that he is incarcerated. They tell me it is POSSIBLE that he is home with an ankle bracelet, but that doesn't show on their computer system.
Are you kidding me? So I ask the guy on the phone if this happens often. "All the time" is his answer. This thief was supposed to do 18 months behind bars!!!

So I ask once again; are you sure your system doesn't show him in jail? He confirms his first response. So I tell him that Bernie and Hillary would be ecstatic with this outcome:D Silence; on the other end. I think the top of his head blew off:) So I tell him that this jerk has made fools of us all. He was originally charged with a felony. We dropped the charges down to give him a break:mad::mad: Then the judge found him guilty, but he only had to pay restitution on the "deductible" that we had to pay to the insurance company.

So if he steals a unit and sells it for $1000; then gets caught and has to pay me $500 (deductible); he pockets $500.

Then he runs us around in the court system using every excuse possible to stay out of jail. He either doesn't have a lawyer (case postponed) or he can't pay restitution because he doesn't have a job; and the court gives him more time to pay.

Now he's sitting home (probably) watching TV and laughing his ass off at us. I tell the guy from the court system that November can't get here fast enough. He says "excuse me, what do you mean?". I say, I'm not a fervent Donald Trump supporter, but this **** has got to change. Every elected official should be sent a message; "if you are more concerned with the felon, than the victim, you will be replaced".

Gov. Hogan's veto was just overridden by the democrats in Annapolis. Felons will now have the right to vote once they get out of jail. O'Malley couldn't get illegal people in Maryland drivers license's and signed up to vote fast enough.

Well, I hope change is coming. And I will not apologize for my opinion. No longer will I give a chit if I am considered politically incorrect. Half of the politicians (dems and repubs) need to be not only voted out of office, but run out on a rail as well.

So there you have it; my experience with the court system.

Have a Snickers.:D
The piece of S*** isn't worth loosing sleep over. All we can do is vote for change. I went through the same thing when a kid stole my credit card. Went to court and nothing happened except a PBJ.
You need to go play with the boat for an hour or two;)

Don't forget me either...Also if you ever run across the guy again and I'm with you just point him out. I will choke him out and stage some compromising pictures that we can post all of the place. It's not legal justice but it would be funny justice!

Marty everyone gets screwed hard a few times. I learned a long time ago that MD has no interest in prosecuting criminals unless it's a high profile case that'll look good on a resume.

Try being a landlord in this awful state. I'm still out $6k from a woman that used FALSE IDENTIFICATION to rent from me. Casesearch now has like 3 pages of **** on this douchebarrel, and she's never spent more than a weekend in jail.

5 years later and not a penny for me.

You did a great job staying proactive on it. Might be time to spill the names of the judge, ASA, etc......
