Curious: NRP Checks

I hear some say they never get checked, others say they always get checked. Post up here when you are checked this year. I tend to be one of frequent checks since I boat out of popular areas such as outside solomons and SPSP most frequently. This isnt a bash or praise NRP thread just to see how often anglers are getting checked to see levels of enforcement on the water with what they have.

So Far I have had 2 checks: Once in March at the CCNPP Rips where I got a full boat inspection including looking in my hatches

2nd check was last sat in the mouth of the severn. Officer pulled up and checked our number of lines and asked if we had stingers and or barbs on our hooks. Did not board us.

I have never had a rude or ignorant inspection. I have always been treated nicely and respectfully.

I was also checked on Saturday -13th.

Again on Weds - 17th.

Different officer each time.

I'm rack stored so never trailer to popular ramps. Never been stopped for any reason FWIW

BF, I was asked by the Dept to join up here in order to let you know your frequent checks are because you're a shady dude..

:D

I forgot to post this but last week I saw a couple of DNR/NRP officers in an unmarked boat (approx 18-19') coming back into the Sandy Point marina area. Can't say for sure if they were smokies in a plain wrapper or just bringing their personal boat to work:D. I took a pic but don't want to post it as I agree with whatever tactic they use to enforce the rules. Just want to give those here a heads up that they are not always going to be in a recognizable vessel.

Shady aint the word... I am like a gangsta with my pants down low... :D

Due to my youngest puking her guts up all day sat and my wife having errands to run, we only got out for a few hours late Sat afternoon and trolled from the Mouth of the severn to TPL. We caught a skunk in that window.

DNR was at SPSP checking many of the boats that came in. Last I heard from the one guy was they checked 6 fish out of more than 50 boats they checked that came in.

Nrp

I was checked on the 13th and 14th, not boarded, just came along side to check my sticker and count my rods and chit chat for a few.
Saturday was a single guy, Sunday was a crew of 3.

I got interviewed by DNR yesterday at the SPSP ramp.

Questions asked included:
  • How many fish kept
  • How many fish released
  • How long was I on the water
  • How many rods I was using
  • How many trips I make a year
  • How much I spent on the trip
  • Was I happy with the current regulations
  • Any changes to the regulations I would like to see

I wasnt sure how to answer the amount spent. MRFSS interviewers always were specific and asked how much I spent on the trip not including gear (Ie. fuel, ice, food). I was in a rush to get my daughters off the bus so I didnt probe the question and said what I probably spent on fuel. Thinking back I should have included all the new lures, shads, and gear I bought earlier this week, the boat, the truck, the trailer, registration fees, etc.

I was glad to hear them ask about regulations. I told them I was satisfied for the most part with the regulations. However I would love to see the season go to the end of December because that is the best month for fishing the bay and I hate having to go the VA to keep one fish when the fishing is great in MD.

Tuesday the 7th off the Magothy, officers pulled up checked stickers, asked how the fishing was, asked to see a life jacket and then were on their way. Nice fellas.

Same with me...A week ago....I am guessing it was a younger guy, maybe late 20's, crew cut, and more interested about people not following fishing rules than whether or not you had a fire extinguisher...Really nice guy...Talked to him many times...

I didnt fish this weekend due to the winds Sat and Sunday but today we took friends to Rockhall for lunch at Watermens. Upon launching I got the full inspection by DNR again. This time I was actually given a decal to put on my boat. While I dont mind getting inspected, we were pressed for time because my buddy had to leave to go back to Norfolk today. I wasnt super friendly with the inspector but he was friendly and hurried up for us. Hopefully the decal will slow down the inspections :)

SPSP or local ramp?

They were checking for licences at the Cape fishing pier yesterday.

B-Faithful 05-27-2013 05:56 PM

SPSP. We went to the community ramp first but with the low water and short ramp I feared not being able to get the boat back on the trailer. I am a little long for the community ramp unless the water is up. We had blow out tides this weekend.

If you frequent the ramps where DNR does the most checking, you can expect to be checked. Tell them to hit the ramps and waterways over here. They need it bad.

checks

I have been fishing for several years most weekends, boat is kept in water April- December & have never been checked. I fish out of pax r & bay. in fact I watched USCG check a dozen boats yesterday and pas us several times, but were not checked. this was by the gas docks.

mark1234 05-28-2013 01:35 PM

Bfaithful- You must be a shady look person... How many times have you been checked this year alone? DNR must be wise to your fuddy duddy, family style boat being a great cover for your shenanigans.

Two weeks ago I was trolling solo with boards out, when a young DNR lady pulled up beside me (forward of the boards) and asked to see a life jacket and fire extinguisher. After I showed them to her, she moved on to the next boat. I'm grateful she had enough sense to not ask to have everything brought in so she could do a full check.

B-Faithful 05-29-2013 03:42 PM

LOL Mark. My wife said he skipped over several piers to get to us skipping the boats that looked to be not well cared for (less likely to have safety gear) or the passengers to be drunks. She thinks he saw us as an opportunity for and easy inspection without confrontation..

I wish they would just give every capt a brethalizer when they came in

Got my sticker now so we are all good!

NRP were at the mouth of Deep Creek on the Magothy last night around 7:30. Seemed to be mostly interested in jet skiiers.

He eventually escorted a group of about 4 of them back to the boat ramp. Not sure why.

At about 1:30 pm on Monday May 27th (Menorial Day) near the green #1 at the Rhode/West, I turned around to see a Maryland DNR police boat approaching. “Hey Kate, I think that we’re getting pulled over!” I exclaimed as the patrol boat slowed and pulled alongside. The crew could obviously see that we had a current fishing license for the boat, and one of the officers asked us if we had any luck fishing. We told them of our success, and informed them that our catch was alive in our live well.

The officers motioned as if to show them our catch, so we invited them aboard to check. One of the officers came aboard, checked the live well to his satisfaction, and then proceeded to give us a safety inspection. We passed with flying colors, and the two officers were soon on their way. Before they left, I told them to catch the guys setting the illegal nets measuring in miles. It was good to see that the DNR was out enforcing the regulations; if we had more of that, the fish stocks might not be as decimated as they are.

B-Faithful 06-08-2013 05:22 PM

USCG stopped me at SPSP today wanting to do a safety inspection.. I handed them the NRP inspection slip from memorial day and they didn't take any more of my time.

B-Faithful 07-04-2013 09:17 PM

DNR NRP officer checked my cooler and measured my fish we keep on Wed. :)

PhilK999 07-04-2013 10:29 PM

I was on Ed's boat 2 Saturdays ago, June 22, in the OC back bays, and DNR officer on his way past us asked us if we had any luck. When we answered yes, he came back to see our keeper flounder. He said we were the winners that day because it was the only one he saw all day. He didn't ask to see anything else.

There was an officer back at the public ramp also but we were out of there before she had a chance to come over and check us out again.

B-Faithful 07-05-2013 04:08 PM

I got stopped today waiting for a charter at SPSP today. I quickly showed him the yellow slip of paper from the last check and he was on his way.. :)
