How many rods do you troll

My typical spread is between 9-13 rods. I have trolled as many as 17 with tridents but prefer a 12 rod spread with 100' of boards. I mostly run 5 off of each board and 3 deep or 4 off each board and 4-5 deep

Just seeing what most are trolling.

Slayer 12-02-2009 10:38 AM

Right now doing 13 (8 board/5 boat) but hoping to expand to 15 (adding 2 boards) by next Spring.

Gitzit 2 12-02-2009 10:44 AM

we're running a small CC so we only troll 4 rods....if we troll
might try boards but i don't have a tie off point very high off the water to connect the boards.:(

there are only a few weeks out of the season that we even break out the broomsticks...we prefer to LTJ whenever possible.

13 lines in all. 4 umbrellas off each planer line. 2 deep boat rods with 16 and 24 oz. inlines with big umbrellas. A dummy line, (lots of fun) a downrigger rod off the transom opposite the dummy, and a WWB with a small umbrella.

Fish Nut 12-02-2009 11:49 AM

I normally run 10-12 rods in my spread. I run planners with 100’ of line with the let back they are roughly 65' 70’ off each side normally take out 5 total with a max of 6 anglers on the boat trolling. Last year during a skunk day I had 14 rods out. It didn’t get the skunk off.

Evidently more rods didn’t equal more fish that day.

Conjuror 12-02-2009 12:03 PM

Depends. 6-8 when by myself....and even sometimes just 4. But when my son or others are on board I load em up.:D

ericmagsamen 12-02-2009 01:20 PM

Spring 10-12
Summer 4-6

goinsfishin 12-02-2009 01:49 PM

I'll run anywhere from 3 rods (out alone for a couple hours) to the Full Monte of 19 rods and 2 dummy lines.......and anywhere in between depending on season, crew and conditions.

I thought I posted earlier today, but I can't seem to find it now. Anyways, we troll 13 lines total. Four umbrellas off each planer line, One heavy boat rod off each side, one 16 oz, one 24 oz. A dummy line off the transom, and a downrigger off the other side of the transom, and finally a WWB down the middle with a small umbrella. Mark.

15 rods. Six singles one side, five tandums other side, four deep (in spring). Right now, more tandum that singles. 5th (Marty)

reeltor 12-02-2009 03:17 PM

When I"m solo on the Hoopty, I'll run one board pulling a mix of tandems and solos totaling 6 rods then 4 deep off the back and and other side. If I have company I'll pull up to 14. I've installed zero degree rod holders and use temporary bow rail holders up front to handle the extra rods. A word of warning; check your temp or adjustable rod holders often. Several TF posts last year were regarding lost equipment from adjustables slipping or failing.

swartj 12-02-2009 03:17 PM

If I run two board an 11 rod spread: 4 off each board, 2 deep off the transom and one wwfb.

If I run one board a 9 rod spread: 5 off the boat (2 deep, 2 intermediate, 1 wwfb), 4 off the board.

Francis 12-02-2009 03:49 PM

Normally 22. This consists of 14 board rods and 8 boat rods. I can easily go to 24 when I have my buddy along who brings two extra rods and little rod riggers. Buying the rod riggers and the extra rods for me would be like a 300 dollar investment and I am not sure it's worth it.

I don't think 24 rods doubles your catch over a 12 rod spread, but, it can't hurt.

Hakuna Matata 12-02-2009 04:29 PM

I've run as many as 16, usually about 12 though.

Damn Paul...I want to see 14 on the hoopty!! That has gotta be a sight :D
At this point, I'd just like to see the Hoopty or I'm gonna lump you in the category of Marty (5th) and Tim (Twiskman) of invented boats :D

To answer the question, I ran 12 all last year...this year, I'm getting overzealous...maybe 14! I'm trying to get rid of my planer boards and run only boat rods though thanks to some help from a great guy (no names mentioned....Steve) I may have it nailed down!! Then I'll be running 9!

PhilK999 12-02-2009 06:36 PM

Spring I'll run 10 - 14 rods depending on how large a crew, 6 - 8 off of boards, rest boat rods.

Summer and fall it will be 4 - 8 rods depending on if the blues are in the area. I had eight rods in one day with Reeltor & my crew one day last fall and had every rod hook up with 15-20" blues, on two straight passes, what a mess?

drichitt 12-02-2009 08:35 PM

13 plus a dummy or two. CC with no T-top, but a have a tree growing out of my bow to attach planer lines:D Thought of addding a few more rods in the spring, but decided against it seeing how the wind is shifting over at the DNR:(. ....Don

alltackle 12-02-2009 10:15 PM

23 with a full crew. Maxed at 26 to prove I could fill every rod holder on the boat. 19 is the efficient maximum.

I can make you a nice deal on a 26 rod spread. Just drop by the new shop!

Francis 12-03-2009 09:30 AM

Heh,

Four of my reels are tiny Penn 9M's that I bought from you. I didn't say I trolled 22 rods in style, just that I trolled them. . .

ReelSmith 12-12-2009 12:04 PM

On my boat I usually fish 16 (sometimes up to 21) in the spring with boards and 11 without boards. The better the fishing is, the less rods I run.

Rivercat09 12-12-2009 12:31 PM

I've typically run five with 2 dummies in the spring and three in the summer with no planers. This spring with the added boards it will be more like 11 to 13, less until I get used to the boards.

 Pheeww! I thought a three rod spread all hooked up with blues was a mess! But when I did it, I was solo and have no auto pilot.

cmason164 12-12-2009 05:52 PM

I troll 12 usually, 4 off the boat and 4 off each board. Early fall I just ran boat roads with pretty god success. I could probably squeeze a couple more into the spread, but the 12 is pretty easy and allows for good lanes to get the fish into the boat

EDGEWATER 12-12-2009 06:10 PM

6-rods by myself. No planers.

spynet000 12-12-2009 08:30 PM

Same as francis, 22

8 boat rods, 14 planers. and sometimes 24 if I feel like putting the dummies out. It gets cramped on a cc running anymore than that.
