It was a white rice day
I had an invite from a cbangler (I'll let him post about the trip if he wants) and we had a great day. We caught some fish, I fished with two new people, and got on another sweet boat. I like to see how others have their rigs (boat, tackle, electronics) different than mine. I picked up a few tips about using rubber bands (I normally use scotty clips) and keeping them from sliding through the mono (try wrapping the mono twice around your hand then applying the rubber band around the doubled line). I saw a good place to keep my cutters and pliers strapped down with wire ties on the down tubes of your hardtop (other than on my dash) to have them more accessable. And finally, saw Rob's (fishnut) lures in action (they sure do catch).
HOWEVER, I dropped my cell in the water at the ramp. I took the battery out and dried it as best I could, but still not working. I saw a post once about putting your wet cell in a jar of uncooked white rice and it would draw out the moisture. I'll let you know how it turns out. So that's how it turned out to be a white rice day . 5th (Marty) |
The cell phone companies are missing a golden opportunity.
Market a phone for boaters / fishermen that is waterproof and floats. There are literally hundreds of cell phones dropped in the bay every year. When I dive - you should hear the fish calling each other :D Hope the rice trick fixes it. I've heard placing near a light bulb helps too. |
Thanks Skip, might try putting the rice jar near a light bulb:D. My cell is so old (HOW OLD IS IT); that it doesn't even take photos. When I go into best buy to look at phones, the guy takes a look at it and shakes his head. They always ask if I can still get batteries for it:eek:. If I get a new phone, I'll have to get Baldzilla to show me how to work the new HDS 7 AND the phone. My luck, I'll have tennis elbow from fishing and carple tunnel from texting on the new phone.

I was talking with a USCG officer a few days ago and he had a new one....small, compact, rubberized, nice screen and lots of features.....pretty cool. The problem is they are expensive compared to a normal cellphone. Try setting your wet phone on a heat vent overnite....should dry it out.....air conditioning will also remove the moisture during the summer season. |
Hey Marty,
Catching always makes everything else better! If you have Verizon Wireless, let me know. I might have a phone you can have. Not sure...I'd have to look for it but my daughter gets a new phone everytime I turn around. |

The rice works well, but it will take some time. The mistake people make is using too much heat. Rice works on laptops as well. |

Keith; thanks. I hope the rice does the trick, but it is a verizon phone. I looked right on the side of the can (and string), and it says verizon:rolleyes:. 5th (Marty) |

I have a lot of experience with waterproof cell phones. None of them float. I've tried them all and the best one is the Motorola GZone, original version. They don't make them anymore, but they show up new or almost new on Ebay from time to time. I'm using one now and have three in reserve. They're the Hummer of cell phones. Big and bulky but extremely durable. I dropped mine in the water at the ramp once. Didn't realize it until I got home, waited for my wife for another hour, then we drove to the ramp. Shined her car lights in the water and couldn't find it, so I called it. It lit up 3 feet deep in 40 degree water. Rolled up my pants, waded out and got it and used it for another six months when I dropped it in the channel. Bought the newer version and it lasted 3 months. Gotta get the original. |
Guys; thanks for all the helpful tips. Tomorrow, I may be asking how to get rice out of my cell phone:D.
Mark; I thought my tennis elbow was from fishing, but now, maybe not:eek:. Looks like some great weather later this week. Lets do some spot burning:rolleyes:, oops, I mean some fishing reports. 5th (Marty) |
Microwave for 60 seconds:D

Hope you flushed all the salt out of it before you dried it

Marty - I felt like $h!t yesterday watching your phone fall in the water. Marty was out for a boat ride with me yesterday and back at the ramp is when his phone took the plunge. I still have NO idea how best to load my boat on a bunk trailer; never used one before. Easy to unload, but PITA to load (Ignorance is bliss). Yesterday's attempt left the boat a good 15 feet from the bow rest and required a fair amount of winching. Trying to avoid getting his feet wet, Marty climbs up on the hitch to let out more strap. As he is bending over to reach the handle, his phone falls onto the ramp in 1.5" of water:eek:. Oh $h!t:(. It sat there just long enough to absorb enough water to qualify for the rice treatment. Jon Wittman (jwittman) was standing near by and was quick to grab it, but not quick enough. I hope you get it working and I promise to have this process improved before you come out again with me....Don
Oh yeah, Fish Nut's lures did catch a few fish on our boat ride:rolleyes: |
Marty, If that phone fell in the water at Sandy Point, rice will not help it. The water there is so bad that even if it dries out your phone will consistently dial wrong numbers and hang up on people. Get a new one. Go to verizonwireless.com and create an account and do all your business there........simple. Good luck............Gary
