Trident rod holders

I'm considering trident holders rather than cutting more holes in the deck. Any opinions on using the trident holders with planer boards?

I fished with a guy on a freshwater river once who used two of them on the back of a skiff. Worked well enough in his situation.

He later moved them up front when we went Crappie fishing.

Just remembering what they looked like (Ya' know, that "pitchfork" shape, or to truly use nautical terms "trident" shaped!) I'm not so convinced they would work well with planer boards. I've never seen ANYONE run planers with them.

Will they work; yes. Is it the best option; no. Do we always do things on our boats that is the best option; no:D.

I considered these on my old boat, but decided to go with more rod holders across the transom instead. I've seen lots of fishermen get excited when a fish strikes. This leads to quickly grabbing the rod and POSSIBLY pulling the whole trident out of the gunnel holder and creating quite a mess. Hopefully, your trident is anchored with a bungee of some kind so you don't watch it fall to the bottom of the bay.
So; if you use them, just be carefull and know the risks.

Thanks

Thanks for the replies. I'm putting a rocket launcher on the after end of the hardtop, two more flush holders on port and starboard and then a holder or two on the hardtop stanchions. I just hate to drill holes in the deck.

I know what you mean.....just doesn't feel right to cut holes in a boat.

I think you'll be much happier that you did though.

I fished on last weekend with my mate on a freshwater river once who used two of them on the back of a skiff. Worked well enough in his situation. Hope to caught some Crappie fishes in next adventure. :)
