Here's a hypothetical for you. . .

OK guys,
Let's say you're trolling in the fall and it's sort of rough and you're sort of preoccupied. So distracted, in fact, that you don't see the crab pots until it's too late. You take immediete evasive action but catch a bouy in your planer board.

Now, you're boards a huge and it doesn't affect the board but you start dragging it. You reel in all your board lines on that side and winch in the board while still trolling, but, by the time you unwrap the pot from the board, you're in 108 feet of water and the pot only has 60 feet of line on it so it will most certainly become a ghost pot and probably snag another of your lines if you drop it anyway. Oh, and it has a dozen #1 males in it.

So. . . what would YOU do!?!?

The wrong thing to do would be to create another ghost pot.
The right thing to do would be to swing back into the general area and drop it where it came from.....even if it means pulling your boat rods to get it over.
The crabber gets his pot (and hopefully his crabs in it), no ghost pot is created and you can sleep knowing you did the right thing.

Here's another:
Your trolling in the spring; you have your boards out and a 15 rod spread. It's chilly in the morning but warms up quite nicely in the afternoon. In the morning, all your deep rods were getting hit, but now the rock are almost sunning themselves and your light board rods are getting lots of action. You have caught several fish, but you are one short of your limit. You can see a "go fast" boat rapidly approaching from your port side and heading toward your position. As the boat closes, you send one of your crew to the bow and wave off the boat. The "go fast" boat sees you waving and slows down. As it approaches, you realize it has three topless women in the boat. They come as close to your boat as your boards allow and after a few moments of conversation, they ask you to follow them back to Solomon's for a few beers.
Now; knowing you only need one more fish to fill out your limit; do you pull in your spread and follow them, or do you continue fishing for your last fish? What would you do? 5th (Marty)

Francis,
What goinsfinshin said would be correct

Marty,
Get your fish and then girls! Tell them to gather their friends and you and your crew would be right there.

For the crab pot I would hopefully be able to return it to the general area it came from.

Marty, with fish already in the box, I would have to try for a grand slam and pursue the elusive Split Tail

No reason to be greedy with trying to catch a limit. What is the limit on split tail in Solomons?

goinsfishin 11-08-2009 06:20 AM

Solomon's it is......can catch fish any day.....time to chase the split-tail.

Marty - Try to kill two birds with one stone:D. Talk one, or all, of them into jumping on your boat to catch a trophy of their own and then head to Solomons for a few beers...Don
