Expensive Spring!

I took the boat to BOE for a list of maintenance items.

The first call was that at some point I had picked up some line in the prop which had then in turn wiped out the seals. The lower unit was full of water and had wiped out the bearings and rusted up the reverse gear. I elected to go with a new OEM lower unit. I am going to take the old lower unit and have it rebuilt at some point and keep it as a spare or sell it to a friend in need for what it costs me to have it rebuilt plus a 12 pack of Natural Light.

Today I got an email that my blinking spreader lights were terminal. I am replacing them with a pair of those cool spreader lights Jim put on the Hard Merchandise from Wicked Tuna. They are nice but pricey.

No more calls, please Jim.

Oh yeah, my annual slip rental is due Saturday....

Sounds as though I'll be buying at Happy Harbor this summer:D

You will have a spare lower unit and I have two spare props:) lets hope no other Honda owners need them:rolleyes:

So is Jim dropping new batteries in as well?

Doug and I went with Capt John today and ran his Charter from Galesville down to Deale and put her in the slip. Didn't search the channel, we hugged the western shore, no bait seen, but ospreys are all over Deale building nests and eating alewives:D

Hopefully, the next call from Jim will be a pickup call. She's ready for the slip.

OUCH.

FWIW: Cheap insurance to change lower unit lube at least once a year- before freezing weather. I change mine twice - around July 4th and then around Thanksgiving.

Good idea to also pull prop - check for line - grease shaft. Seen props stuck on shafts before.

Hopefully the fish gods except your $$$ sacrifice and rest of 2014 goes smooth.

It gets changed every spring. It's in the slip from April through Nov. I may start doing a short haul around August to change fluids.

The key is to teach your friends not to drop their spot down while you are still backing down....the line in the wheel was all 14lbs Vanish! ;)

Damn - that's even worse when it's your own crew's line

I got lucky once when my buddy got line in my prop. Turned that engine off - fished on other one rest of the day and came in on one.

Once home - pulled prop and found short piece of his line we had to cut - but also few feet of line from ??????. Best guess from from Sandy Point jetty area.

Luckily - it did no damage but likely would have if left there for any time.

That sucks!! I had some water in my lower unit this fall but caught it before it got too cold. It was just the small gasket around the drain screw that was shot so it was a cheap fix.

I bet to make up for your spring, the Boat Gods will drop fuel prices back down to "nothing" his summer. (You know, the $3.00 a gallon they have now conditioned us to be excited about!). Here's to hoping...

Thanks, I appreciate it. We've got the big charter and enough trips booked to keep us busy, but I'd still like to have my little boat available for quick afternoon, fun trips. It's in Bill's care now...I sleep better already.
