Queston on eeling

I was thinking about trying to drift eels (if available) around the pilings later this week and was wondering if the technique is the same as livelining ie; letting the fish take the bait before setting the hook?

I was also wondering if anyone ever used those Gulp eels I have seen in stores? They are really natural looking to me but are they effective?

Same as livelining. I have never used the Gulps yet.. Good luck and give us the report.

I bought the Gulp and the Power bait eels. I have not used them enough to say how well they work. The gulp disintegrate in the package. I've had them since spring. I think they have a nuget center, that's what makes them taste good!
The Power bait comes pre-rigged with weight and a double hook..

I think a weight would have to be used on the Gulp to get them down in that current. Either on a 3 way swivel or an in line weight.

I tried the gulps last year at kiptopeake. We fished 6 lines in various depths, 4 eels, 2 gulps, caught 4 fish between 8-11, the gulps never got touched. I looked at them when they were in the water next to the boat and they just didnt have any action the way we were fishing them, Seems like they could be effective on a large jighead though....

The big question is: Where does one get live eels?!?!

Ummmm.....at the eel store.

No really, do most the bait and tackle shops have them?
How seasonal are they?
I don't fish them enough to know.

Simple..raid someones eel pots when they're not looking. :D

eels will be the same as most live-lining....give them time after the pick up
i fish mine on a fish finder rig so the fish doesn't feel the weight needed to get down in the current

Gulp does work...at least for me...i caught an 80* black drum on 1oz jighead tipped with a 2" Gulp peeler crab bait

never tried the Gulp eels
