Sanitary Sewer Overflow
Patapsco Pumping Station
(Towson, March 26, 2012) Public Works utility crews discovered a rupture in a 54-inch diameter pressure line inside the Patapsco Sewage Pumping station (4612 Annapolis Road in Baltimore-Highlands) at 11:00 PM, Sunday, March 26. The ductile iron pipe which failed transports about 17 million gallons of sewage daily from the western half of the County to the Patapsco Treatment Plant in Baltimore City. The overflow, which began yesterday at 3:30 PM, is on-going.

March 26, 2012 EMERGENCY CLOSING FOR SECTION OF PATAPSCO RIVER IN BROOKLYN
The Department of Health has ordered an emergency closing and warns against swimming and other direct water contact at the Patapsco River in Brooklyn from Annapolis Road downstream due to a sewage spill of more than 17 million gallons caused by a force main break at Baltimore County's Patapsco Pumping Station on March 25. The Department warns people coming in contact with the affected water to wash well with soap and warm, clean water immediately. Clothing should also be washed. The closure will remain in effect until further notice.
And so begins another year of catastrophic failures and ****ty water.

And here's a direct link to Anne Arundel County waterway advisories if you'd like to check the water before going out

Sound Advice.....

Nothing like catching a Patapsco White fish or a tampon...

Tampons actually put up a good fight:D

But if you get a red one, sure as hell don't put it in your mouth and post a pic on a forum or it'll just lead to more restrictions :D

Only thing good - water is still cool.

Spills when water is warm are worse - bacteria grows.

Sad thing - many sewage pipes in our area are close to 100 years old , well past the expected service life. Add in they are carrying much more then designed for - recipe for disaster.

My last house was built in the mid 50's and had old terra cotta sewer lines running to the street. Didn't take long before I understood the flaws inherent in those old pipes.

I like to think that I'm fairly in tune with politics, and for the life of me I can't remember hearing more than one or two local politicians ever screamimg about protecting the bay by upgrading the pumping station pumps and back up power, as well as replacing those old pipes.

Instead, our state is wasting money replacing oxidized guard rails along the highways with pretty, shiny new guard rails.
