This Menhaden Issue Needs To Be Discussed
As usual the CCA and MSSA have gone back on their word.
In the early 2000's when this LY issue became a push by the fishing clubs, they were adamant that they were not interested in the bait fishery. Well the liars are at it again. They now want to include the bait fishery in the push to stop all harvest of LY's. The option that is being pushed by CCA, Chesapeake Bay Foundation and others is #2..... #2 will end all harvest of Menhaden within the bay. This will seriously affect commercial crab fisherman, hook/line fisherman, charter boat captains and recreational fisherman. Yes, the reduction industry needs to curtail the taking of Menhaden in the bay, but not at the expense of a lot of other businesses. A different option or addendum to exclude the bait fishery needs to be introduced into the proposal. |
First, the early 2000's were a decade ago, and a lot can and has changed in that time. To call both groups "liars" seems a bit extreme. "Flip floppers"???? Well I'll give you that one.
What is the reasoning behind the banning of all harvesting? Do you have a link to what you're talking about? You forget that some, if not most of us were probably not around or involved in these things 10 years ago. Some background info would be helpful. At face value, I agree that it sounds a bit overzealous and unfair to the businesses that this will affect. I don't like the banning of anything and the state of MD is all too happy to jump on the BANwagon when often no problem exists, or when a few simple tweeks of existing code could correct a problem. |
It's all in the process of negotiations. You ask for it all and accept less. If you start with half you end up with a quarter..............Gary

If your not up to speed on the Menhaden issue, I don't have 2 days to bring you up to speed. Best I can do is point you to the ASMFC website and tell you to read about Menhaden as a managed species. http://www.asmfc.org/ Here is the issue. http://www.asmfc.org/speciesDocument...licComment.pdf |

Sounds like the fishing clubs want to drop a nuclear bomb on Maryland, hoping the fallout will get to Virginia where the problem is. |
Reds, what options do you recommend and why?
I havent spent time to understand the 25 page document yet and the options made available. However i did make a call to the MSSA and ask what they are advocating. They are in support of option 2 for threshold and option 4 for target. They also told me that their information and position is available on the website here: http://www.mssa.net/menhaden_muddle/index.html I do know that Charlie Hutchinson, who is MSSA's lead on menhaden, is very well respected for his understanding of the issue and his articles regarding the menhaden problems have been published in some state and local newspapers. |
This makes my head hurt. :(
