Planer Board Rod Placement
 

See the image below to see how we run our rods for planer board fishing. I had to spice two photos together since I am lacking the correct camera lense. We use the trident rod holders to expand the total number of rod holders. It works for us. Next spring, we are adding another set of tridents. We flatline our planer board lines to avoid hitting the rods in turns. Next year I am fabricating masts to fit in the outrigger bases to take the planer line height above the rod height level.

Any input will be greatly appreciated.

Are your board rods on the roof as well, or just the trident rods?


If your flatlining your planer board lines, you may consider running the lines off your bow rail

Here's how I do it. I bought a alum pipe, mounted it on a board, bolted it to my rails, and put the rods in that. The lines get tied right off to my bow rail.

It's a little less choatic than running them off of a combination of the roof, the gunnels, and whatever else It also gets all of the board rods way up front and out of the way of everything else.

Again, it only works when your running your boards off the bow.

I like your setup. I do run some off the roof but with the added tridents, I should get them on the gunnel where they belong. I might try running the planer lines forward, but I have a cuddy and really do not like going up there unless I have to.

Oh, I thought it was stricly a CC. My bad. If it's a WAC or has a cuddy up front it would be way harder.

FWIW in this picture you can see how I just wrap the planer baord line around the rod holders. When I am trolling almost every day (like the spring) I can get my stuff in the water quicker than most.

Keith. I am having a hard time seeing where you are running your planer lines from. I am going to have welded rod holders added to my uprights so that I dont have to use tridents and it gives me more cockpit area to boat a fish without moving rods. I would either move the rod holders forward of the top like francis states (would give more room to boat a fish too) or move the planer line as far forward on your T-top as possible without creating too much stress on the top. You could also add rod holders to your top around the sides and angle them just slightly out as you move forward (a slight angle will make for rod tip seperation).

They begin at the front corners of the T-Top and angle down to the mid cleats and then out.

Why dont you run them just from the top?

The lines hit the rods in the turns.

Keith; your tridents look like they have a curve in them, are these different than what you sell in your store. I thought the ones I looked at in your new shop were straight, like the ones Greg is showing in his photo.

Greg, why don't you like your tridents, I can see how holders on your side posts would be "cleaner". Are you concerned about lifting rods out of the tridents and losing the holder/or rods from them; or are they just in the way? 5th (Marty)
