Bottom Fishing - 5/22

This evening I decided it was time to find out what was on the local oyster bars. Got some bottom rigs ready, got some bloodworms, and grabbed our bottom fishing rods. It was a quick 2 hour trip.

We quickly found small perch on a 20-30' ledge, but it was pretty slow. Only a few fish per drift, and doubles were rare. Most were about 8.5" but we did get one that was about 10".

2nd location in 15' and then over the ledge was pretty much a bust.

3rd location in 18-20' was still slow, but much better with several doubles and a 12 incher.

It was a fun time, despite the slow bite and the dreary weather, and it proved that there are some perch on the oyster bars despite the unusually cold water for this time of year. However, the current was almost non-existent despite the fact that it should have been just past max incoming, so I think that probably had a lot to do with the slow bite. Need to try again soon on a strong current to really see what's going on, and see if we can also find some spot and croaker.

At our 1st stop, there were lots of marks on the screen that looked like small rockfish. A nice looking new Judge 36 showed up, saw those marks, and tried to jig on threm... not sure if he hooked up.

Good to hear that the perch are starting to set up on the oyster bars. Thanks for the post.
