How long do you flush?

When I get back to the dock, how long should I flush my motor? I usually flush for 5-8 minutes. Should it be longer?

I try to flush once, usually takes about 30 seconds, unless its a big load, then sometimes it takes two flushes...Regardless flushing for 5 minutes seems like a waste of time and water...

Also if you are on your own septic system like me, then flushing for 5 minutes will really take a toll on your drain field...

Of course if you are flushing for 5 minutes all of the time, you may want to talk to your doctor....

Marty this might not be practical in your case, but with my trailered boat I flushed the motor for 2 to 3 minutes, or longer if I tasted saltwater from the telltale. Normally it was fine after a minute or 2 though.

That's on a 90hp Yamaha. I assume bigger motors would take a bit longer just because......well it's ALL bigger.

I have a Y-gate on the hose bib at my slip and two hoses.

As soon as I back in and tie up, I screw one hose into the flushing fitting on the motor and turn the water on. I then use the other hose and go about washing the boat. Once the boat is washed, I disconnect both hoses and put them away.

The motor get flushed for however long it takes me to wash the boat, so Im guessing 15-30 minutes.

I keep a Salt-Away dispenser on the "motor" hose and run some Salt-Away through the motor every time I flush it as well.
