I didn't get the full zig zag cut, I got 4 smaller cuts along creases in the hand, and they reached in with a tool to remove the offending tissue. I can still see the scars, but it isn't too bad.

The Navy (and others) have been using side scanning sonar for decades. I haven't looked at the Humminbird patent yet (gonna do that next), but it is almost certainly limited in scope.
