Marty, it hit like a ton of bricks and ran immediately right, fast and hard. I yelled out to everyone that I thought I had a big ray on and they reeled in quickly. There are a ton of rays when the tide is slow and the blue hit just as the tide started moving. I was using 20lb braid and a 30lb leader and didn't think I had a chance once I saw its size. All in all I was lucky that it swam with the current instead of under the bridge.
I was fishing with friends from Montreal who netted it and took it home. Next day they texted that they took it to Oyster Bay and submitted it to the Coastal Fisherman, pretty cool. Should show up next week.
Funny thing is that my wife was on the cover of the Coastal Fisherman for winning the Poor Girls Open 4 yrs ago and she hasn't let me forget who gets published.
Been a long, long 4 yrs
