Default Man struck by boat at Thomas Point

A lot of us fish the area surrounding Thomas Point. Did anybody see anything related to this?..............Gary

The Maryland Natural Resources Police are searching for a power boat that struck and injured a Virginia man Saturday in the Chesapeake Bay.

Police said the 55-year-old man was swimming to get a minnow pot near his anchored sailboat when the power vessel ran over him, striking both his legs. Passengers on the man's boat called 911, and when rescue workers arrived they had to jump into the water to keep the man above the surface. He was transported by helicopter to the Maryland Shock Trauma Center.

The incident happened at 2:30 p.m. between Fishing Creek and South River, near the bay's iconic Thomas Point Shoal Lighthouse.

Natural Resources Police said the hit-and-run vessel was a 21-foot Donzi-type boat — a high-performance speedboat with a distinctive, sharp and narrow profile. It was white and champagne-colored and was being operated by a white male and white female, both of whom appeared to be 30 to 40 years old.

Police ask anyone with information to call 1-800-628-9944 and ask for Officer Murray Hunt.
