Is there anything unique or special about the rod you built that makes it a Tog rod?
What kind of line were you using with them? I know I can get away with 14# braid on Rockfish up to about 26 or 28 inches before I get real nervous, but if Tog fight that much harder I might have to give them a try on the medium action rod and my beloved 14# braid.
