Well, I can tell you it won't be commensurate with the crime. Our guy got caught red handed with the goods. Here's how the judge figured up how much in restitution he needed to pay.

Let's say he stole a $2,000 sonar unit and sold it for $1000. You turn the claim over to your insurance. You have a $500 deductible with your carrier to buy a new unit.
Now the perp gets caught. Goes to court, and the judge only makes him reimburse you the $500 deductible.
He sold the unit for $1000; gets caught, only has to pay you $500

Thought crime doesn't pay
Even if he gets caught, he's made $500 profit.

Then he "plays" the system and remains in society for nearly two years. He hasn't missed a birthday or holiday in all this time.

In the meanwhile, your insurance premium has increased and your diminishing deductible has reverted back to a high number. You have missed time from work (if not retired) in order to make the court appearances; and he's foot loose and fancy free. If he has a state appointed attorney, he's made out like a bandit.

Oh wait, he is a bandit
