I took my light tackle "mentor" Jim with me again today for my last fishing trip of 2014. Buoy 56 had been my go-to spot for the last couple of weeks so obviously I went straight there. Well, long story short, my go-to spot had dried up. We spent an hour or more slowly cruising the area trying to find SOMETHING to jig on, but there was just nothing.
I told Jim I had heard reports of people doing well at a spot up in the river. Only problem was that this spot was about 20 miles from where we were!
What the hell, this was our last trip of the year so we decided to make the long run.
Luckily after only a few miles into our journey up the Potomac we noticed some birds on the Virginia side of the river around buoy #5. Not many birds and they were only half-heartedly working the water, but it was definitely worth checking out. We got close to the birds and the fishfinder finally lit up. The last time Jim fished with me he spanked me pretty good, but today I had the better day. We both caught plenty of fish, but the Stingsilver was hot today. I'm thinking the Stingsilver must be frowned upon in the LTJ community because Jim kept saying "no way I'm tying one of those on"
Funniest thing was, even at the end of the day as Jim was getting into his truck to leave, he was still mumbling under his breath something about my Stingsilver....
It was really cool to have the fish all to ourselves without a single boat in sight. We did call one of Jim's friends over and, when they got there, they caught fish also. Eventually there were 5 or 6 boats in the area, but it never was crowded at all.
It was nice to finish the year with a successful trip. I have to say, as much as I like the LTJ thing, I'm really looking forward to getting the trolling gear back out for the spring.
