(Towson, March 26, 2012) Public Works utility crews discovered a rupture in a 54-inch diameter pressure line inside the Patapsco Sewage Pumping station (4612 Annapolis Road in Baltimore-Highlands) at 11:00 PM, Sunday, March 26. The ductile iron pipe which failed transports about 17 million gallons of sewage daily from the western half of the County to the Patapsco Treatment Plant in Baltimore City. The overflow, which began yesterday at 3:30 PM, is on-going.

The Department of Health has ordered an emergency closing and warns against swimming and other direct water contact at the Patapsco River in Brooklyn from Annapolis Road downstream due to a sewage spill of more than 17 million gallons caused by a force main break at Baltimore County's Patapsco Pumping Station on March 25. The Department warns people coming in contact with the affected water to wash well with soap and warm, clean water immediately. Clothing should also be washed. The closure will remain in effect until further notice.
