My son got this for Christmas last year and it's been really helpful to him.

He's learned a few knots and the difference between Texas rigging and Carolina rigging from the book, whereas I was having trouble teaching him. He's 11 now.

I've also found it really useful for learning some new knots and the fine differences between some of the tackle that I don't use frequently.

The book gets good reviews on Amazon, and if you're looking for some small gift ideas for Christmas, this might just be the right thing.

I follow the KISS rule (Keep It Simple Stupid). I tie three knots. First, a polamar knot to tie all my small terminal tackle (snapswivels to line for example). Second an improved clinch knot to tie lures to leader (bucktails, spoons, parachutes, ect.). And third, a 10 x 10 knot to tie leader directly to line (if I'm jigging and don't want any terminal tackle on the line). This knot usually becomes an 8 x 8 because it is strong enough with only 8 wraps.

All three knots work well with both mono and braid.

I was struggling with a uni to uni line to leader one day on Walleye Pete's boat when he showed me the 10 x 10.

Amazing how many different knots there are for fishing.

Some look far too complex for me.

Tying knots has always been a problem for me, and it's definitely my nemesis as I get older and suffer from Dupuytren's disease. (It's much cooler to call it Viking's Disease though ) My hands don't handle small things very well. Good thing I wear a size 15 shoe, eh?

With only have 3 fingers on my right hand knot tying is very hard for me. I have been using the Homer Rhode loop knot and it's very easy for me to tie. I tie the double uni knot to attach my braid to my mono.

Scott all your son will now after reading the book is a brand new custom rod.

Well 30 years ago I got my hand caught in a chain and sprocket in a bowling alley machine my Dad owned and I cut my middle and pointing fingers off on my right hand. Now when I give someone the finger it’s a stump… You should see the faces on people when I pick my nose, they can’t believe I can get my finger that far up.

His birthday is in Feb.......so that might just work out fine!!
