Talking I hearby resign my term as president! (long report *Click on images to enlargen*)

Well, it's been a long run term, and didn't go without names such as, "president of the 39" and some change club", and "catchin' hell", but all good things come to an end! On Friday April 29th, I awoke at 1:30 AM and put on the coffee, to pull outta my driveway and head south to meet Mlag by 4:00 at his house. It's about an hour and 15 min drive, so I left my house at 2:30AM. well just after leaving my house, I see a "shooting star" go streaking across the sky!!!! WOOO!!!! suddenly I was over taken with a feeling.... Oh my gosh.. Todays the day!!!! I KNOW IT!!! THAT SHOOTING STAR WAS THE BIGGEST AND BRIGHTEST ONE I'D EVER SEEN!!!!!!!!! Ok, so I get to Marks house, and tell him about my enlightening moment and he just laughs . Well we get to the marina, get everything loaded and when the guest got there (Bob and Jerry) we were under way. ..

We ran south to the 83 area, and began setting lines... It wasn't long and FISH ON!!! LMAO! I look to Mark and point up at the WWB line as it's bouncing like crazy. We both chuckle as I pull the rod down and hand it to Bob, who had never fished on the bay before let alone caught a spring cow on a rod that's 300' behind the boat! Well he did a heck of a job and wasn't long before he boated the first rock for the day. Upon close inspection, we were thinking it was pushing 40" as because it was so damn broad! Well that started the "el presidente'" conversations and they quickly learned my curse as president. The fish ended up measuring 37" but quickly went into the ice box. Well it wasn't long and fish num 2 hit. This time off the board back 80 bars. I grabbed the rod from the launcher and handed it off to Bob who went to work on this fiesty rock...
DSCN5004.jpg
after a short battle, a nice chunky 35"er went into the box.
We went a while and suddenly i look out and see the planer line on the starboard side was pulling back hard... THEN SNAP! I see a band pop and a rod set at 60 bars swung back through the spread. FISH ON.. I start to think real fast, Ok, this fish didn't pop the rubber band real easily, and I can tell as soon as I grab the rod that it certainly wasn't fighting quite the same so must be a small rock... Being that the 2 guest never get to fish much, I tried to hand the rod off but they insisted i take this one.. OOOOOKKKK.... Well I start to go to work, but quickly realized, something was muuuuch different... Without warning, The Rock began to Violently shake its head.... I got pulled to the stern where Mlag grabbed onto my belt and I pulled back on the rod... Yes sir, smoething was most definately different here... I began to crank on the reel and begin an epic battle. I look out across the spread and see a massive head come out of the water and shake wildly... I gritted my teeth, dug my feet into the deck and begane pumping and reeling...
FishingRock.jpg
The Rock came to the surface... Looked me dead in the eyes, and I glared back into its... She shook her head and dove deeep peeling drag... I gritten my teeth... PUMPED MY FIST IN THE AIR.. "NOT TODAY FISH!!! NOT TODAY!!!! TODAY YOU'RE MINE!".. I Bared down hard on the rod, and pulled with all I had!!!
FishingRock2.jpg
She once again came to the surface as Mark reached as far as he could with the net she shook once more before falling into the net and came aboard... I set the rod down and walked over, looking down on said beast...

At this time I need to back track to a year ago winter time, where we all remember this...

The nightmare still haunts me frequently... To remind me everytime I go fishing on marks boat, Gary "Crabbyandson" made "my" mark on the measuring stick, to ensure everyone knows my "presidential seal" (you'll see in the next photo)..

Now back to the current fish... I stand over said beast and know what needs to be done.. I lay her flat against the measuring stick and.... Better measure this again...... ... Well sorry boys, I resign my term as "President of the 39" and some change club".

Well after a few phone calls, high 5's, hoopin' and hollerin'. We get back to fishin. we went almost 2 hours without a hit, then BAM.. DAMNIT! Didn't come tight... I hardly got the line back into the boat to reset when BAM! FISH ON! I hand the rod to Jerry, who begins the work the rock in.. not a minute after he begins to fight that BAM! FISH ON!!! I pull the rod down and hand this one to Bob and the double begins! Jerry gets his to the boat first and we toss a butterball 32"er into the box as our limit rock. Bob brings in a nice 35"er which is quickly released after unhooking and a quick photo.
Well finally we decide to pull the rods and rack em' up... The whole way home Jerry and Bob were bugging Mark and I about how we got "on the Rock" so well today... Mark and I shrugged and said, just follow the charter boats... "WHAT THE HELL DOES THAT MEAN?" well, Mark and I chuckled the rest of the way to the dock. Once at the dock, we snap a quick photo for Jerry and Bob of their rocks.
DSCN5022.jpg
Right after the photo, Bob asks one more time.. Mark, I noticed today everything we caught, we caught on yellow shads and yellow chutes... and you were following those charter boats... What's your secret??!?! WEll, Mark whispered in his ear to look down the ROck's throat and take a look at what the rock are feeding on...Bob reached deep into the rocks mouth, got a perplexed look in his face and pulled this half way out of the rocks mouth... "Shhhhh, Follow the charter boats..." Mark whispered....

Congratulations Phil! You served a long and hard term with pride, dignity and determination. Every dog has it's day and today was yours. It's a great thing to hear the anticipation and excitement in your writing. This proves that we fish for many more reasons than to catch a fish. We have had a good time with you over the years about this but now you are one of us What is one of us ? Thanks for taking the time to put together this report and pictures. Now it's on to 50 inches. You have plenty company in that venture, including me but if we fish long and hard enough, it will come...........especially with Mark. Looking forward to crabbing with you soon............Gary
