Looking For Advice

Hello All:

I recently purchased a second home on Hungars Creek in Machipongo with an eye toward retirement, but will be visiting as much as possible in the meantime. I would appreciate any tips and/or advice on where to catch a few fish in the local Hungars Creek area. I have a 17 Ft. CC. I'm not looking to horn in on anyone's secret spots or empty the bay of fish for my freezer. I'm just looking for some general information to have some fun catching a some fish and a few fresh fish meals when I'm down there. Thanks for any help you can give and save a few for me!

Please don't think we are rude to newbies, I would guess that most of us on this board are not familiar with that area. The folks on this site could tell you a lot more about the area around the Bay Bridge. I can tell you that I enjoy stopping in to BUY fish and such from Machaponga Clam Shack , but I have never fished there. I have some limited experience with Wachupreage and the CBBT and they are great areas to fish, with a lot of species to persue, but pick your days as that big water can get scary fast!

I have no idea about that area either.
To start, go to the chart 12226 link and start looking at the contours.
The entire creek looks to be shallow but there could be promising areas that are not shown on maps and charts.

Look for points with current on them that may have some deeper water, drop off, any type of depth change. It does not have to be much.
Work your way out to the mouth of the creek again looking for the same thing.
Look for birds, other boats (don't crowd them)
Remember it can/will look different on the different stages of the ebb and flow tides.
Go out at the lowest tides and see what could be underwater structure that could hold fish on a high tide.

Print of buy the chart and carry it with you as you are exploring.
I like to copy/print different sections of charts because you can really zoom in on areas and print them. Make an overall copy and detailed copies.
Make notes on them. Take photos of the areas at low tides.

Fish typically like to have deep water access next to points, flats, hard bottoms, etc.

Use a couple of known fish catching lures and cast you ass off.

Remember, typically fish feed when there is CURRENT.

Thanks, Jeff. I do have charts for the area. I was down for Memorial Day weekend and the following week and did some exploring. Had a lot of hits in the shallows (Kingfish?). My son caught a nice puppy drum off the beach, but lost it about 5 feet from shore! On my last moring there, there were two commercial trawlers out off the last channel marker complete with planes, so there must be fish out there. Hopefully, they left some.
