It looks like there was no way of knowing it was going bad. The rubber covering was hiding a potential disaster. Glad you found out now instead of when you needed them for safety.

Agree 100% with you - those cables are worthless. Even new - would they be strong enough ?
I like heavy duty chains ( crossed over to form X ) - beefy S hooks or shackles and huge bolts with lock nuts to secure everything.
Hopefully never need safety chains but if I do - want them to be able to catch and hold the trailer tongue.

Just saying what I heard. Based on that, I hooked mine up today and was doing donuts on the snow and ice on Rt 4 without the safety chains or the tie down straps.....damn thing wouldn't come off the trailer!
