Default Nissan Small HP Outboard Questions...

A friend has a 5hp Nissan that needs some basic work....probably just a fuel issue from sitting too long.

Ayway, neither Tri State nor Fairwinds wants to work on it. Anyone know a local service shop that would take on a small job on this Nissan?

Close to Annapolis or Deale preferred.

Another fella I used to fish with also had a Nissan 5hp that he abused the crap out of and NEVER took care of it. That thing ran for 20 years and is still running strong. Some people have all the luck I guess.

anyone have any experience with Nissan outboards?

Give South Shore a call in Severna Park.

Larry works on most outboards and might be able to fix it.

Most outboards are similar in design and basics apply to all of them.

Air , spark and fuel. Might be as simple as a clogged fuel line.

Not to be a wise a$$ but check to see if the engine has a fuel shut off valve.

I've seen smaller outboards have these - idea was to prevent fuel spillage if engine had to be laid down to transport.

Most times - valve handle will be in line with fuel line when open. 90* across fuel line should be closed.

Good advice. I haven't looked at it yet; I was just told that she and her son couldn't get anyone to look at it.

For all I know they might not be turning the choke on or something else simple.....but they swear they know how to start it.

If you look at it - an old school trick is to use 1-2 shots of starting fluid to see if it will run.

You do not want to use it more then 1-2 times. Just enough to hear it run a second or two.

The idea is to rule out everything except fuel.

I've rescued a few engines with nothing more then a new spark plug and new fuel. Guys tried for hours but old fuel was sour and old plug was fouled.

You might look for a Mercury Dealer as all small Mercs are made by Tohatsu/Nissan. Actually BRP just signed a deal with Nissan to build their small engines.
