Default Deck Plate Gaskets

Most of my gaskets (round rubber ring) around my deck plates are in poor shape. West Marine doesn't just carry the gaskets, they want you to buy a whole new deck plate. Has anyone found them for sale? Has anyone made their own? It looks like I could just put a rubberband around the plate and use that. I know it wouldn't hold up for any length of time. Can you use a liquid gasket material in a tube? Can you cut out a gasket from gasket material from the auto store?
Any suggestions? 5th (Marty)

Marty, the gasket material from an auto store will work. I have recently had great success with using boat life marine caulk. When or if you remove your plate in the future use a putty knife or thin blade to cut the seal. It is expensive runs 20 dollars a tube.

Default O ring seal

Marty,
A quick search on deck plate o rings netted this. You should be able to find them other places as well or have a local store order them.

Marty - I need to order some for my boat as well. I checked out that website provided by Paul. Looks good except for the ridiculous cost of shipping for (4) $2 gaskets....$16.45 for UPS. The guy who did my survey said I could get them at a 'Hydraulic Shop'. If worse comes to worse, I wouldn't mind splitting the shipping, but even then it is still a little expensive....Don

Don, my point was only that they are available even though WM doesn't carry them so you have to buy the whole deck plate just to get a gasket. You may be able to have a store order them having the part numbers of the size you need and save on shipping. I can't believe they consider 1 o ring = 1 lb.

Paul - If I came across as complaining about your post, I apologize. That was not my intention. Your post was right on. I just wanted to let Marty know there had to be another option. They really wanted $16 for shipping. As you said, you alerted us to the fact that you can get just the O-rings and I thank you for that. I found that you can order the gaskets from the company that actually makes the deck plates....Beckson.com. They are very reasonable and their shipping was only $5. Marty has already placed the order for us....Don

No offense here I checked the site and the shipping was outrageous. I also noted in my post they state the weight of the o ring is approx 1 pound each. They will charge you $16 to ship UPS then put it in an envelope and ship it by USPS for $2.

You can also make a deck gasket from the vinyl shower pan liner that Home Depot sells. CHEAP.............Gary
