fish reports 7/30 and 8/1

Hit a couple of shorter trips livelining the end of last week. A more targeted trip was on 7/30 with Spynett00 and my boy where we landed a few fish to up to the mid 30's.

Sunday was more of a fun trip for kids to land spot and perch with out of town friends but we still caught some smaller stripers in in the 18-22" range off the bridge in about 15 min or so. (broke one off of and landed 3). This was a cool trip because the rockfish were hitting the spot right by the boat and we could see them chasing the spot.

Things I have been finding our are that the little wirey spot are better than the larger sluggish spot and that the outgoing tide has been much more productive than the incoming (could be my luck too)

Here are a couple of photos from the two trips! The first is Dave (spynet000) with a big striper landed last friday. The second is a fish of my buddy from NJ with one of the stripers we landed on Sunday in our brief hit of the pilings.

Did you and Paul get those fish around the pilings or in the general vicinity of the bridge ?

Only bait you have been using has been LL spot ?

When you have caught the fish, have you seen many on the sonar or has it just been let the fish swim and hope a rock takes it ?

I only liveline spot. My neighbor threw a few perch in the livewell and used them a week or two ago. He never got smacked while I was catching on spot.

I have been using no weight and letting the spot swim. Since the small spot have done well, I am using a thim diameter 4/0 octopus Gam hook in the mouth and out the nose of the spot. I drop him on the upcurrent side of the piling and let the spot drift right down the side of the piling. If the spot swims too far away from the piling, you take the chance of your spot getting wacked by a bluefish and it isnt as productive for the rockfish. My meter mostly shows bait fish as there is a ton of baitfish around the pilings right now. While a lot of people anchor the pilings, the last several trips I just drift them and have done well. Besides I have been able to work more pilings this way to find fish.
